NFL Draft: Later Rounds Full of Opportunity for Bears Among Others
Chicago finally gets to anticipate picks Friday night - quantity may be more of a question more than quality
Normally here at WARR Media we’d like to have some live stream reactions going while the Chicago Bears make their all-important first selections in the NFL Draft, which this year is happening in the second round (hopefully) sometime Friday night.
Some technical difficulties are making that harder than we’d like this evening, but stay on the look-out for some activity on our YouTube prior to the end of the weekend, likely on Saturday afternoon when we’re getting towards the end of the Bears’ picks and the entire seven-round proceedings in Las Vegas.
In the meantime I gladly offer this link to NBC Sports Chicago’s The Rush above. On top of it being a product of my current co-workers, its hosted today by WARR family Tony Gill and Kenneth Davis - nice, fun and breezy 20 minutes or so to get you ready for what the Bears are expected to be doing today.
We’re literally minutes away from the 33rd pick being on the clock, the Bears sit at 39th overall first and 48th soon after. There’s a distinct possibility that the team could move down in the name of getting more picks. There’s also always the worry of losing out on a top-50 talent who the Bears could really need, but it seems like the majority of picks in the wild first round were more out of need than anything else — the record number of trades among the first 32 picks help underscore that some reaches may have been made and though there was a particular run on wide receivers (a definite position of need in Chicago) that position remains the deepest in the draft and good options (i.e. immediate starters) should exist at at least though the third round, which is where things will end this evening.
Still, that second round is where a lot of fun can be had, especially with some long-projected 1st rounders still available to be had at the moment. As a guy who’s edited mock drafts weekly for NBCS-Chicago for most of the past several months I can tell you Dean, Ojabo, Booth and McCreary in particular could be real gems to get in the second round judging by how they’ve been looked at for most of this draft evaluation process.
Therein lies the fun of the draft for so many teams and franchises like the Bears, those who feel they’re just a few injections of youthful talent away from a significant turnaround. The first feelings of feeling like you and your team may have gotten over on the other 31 teams is a dopamine feel that should almost be illegal to have without a doctor’s advisement.
How high will the Bears and Chicago feel after tonight? Anything that stands to help Justin Fields should stand to do the trick, either someone to throw to out wide or protect him in the trenches. Outside of that maybe a lock-down corner or two would be nice? Check out some more options here from my guy Alex Shapiro.
More from the NBCS-Chicago homies will come with a special Under Center podcast later this evening and, again, keep an eye out for reflections from yours truly and some of our WARR contributors very soon.
