Usually when a NFL team receives a No. 1 pick it is a franchise-changing moment that precludes the drafting of a new franchise quarterback or a top-tier tackle or edge rusher.
But the Chicago Bears, in as unique a position as any No. 1 pick holder in recent memory, chose a different path.
In our latest edition of the Bears Recap, our lead Bears reporter Saul Rodriguez is joined by WARR NFL analyst Joe Tanksley and our guys Ryan Bukowiecki and Ken Davis from That Davis Show to discuss the headline-grabbing trade from late last week that sent the Bears’ No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL draft to the Carolina Panthers.
In return for that No. 1 the Bears received the Panthers' No. 9 pick and No. 61 picks in this year's draft as well as Carolina’s first-round pick in 2024, a second-round pick in 2025 and wide receiver DJ Moore.
Moore’s inclusion in the deal made football observers eyes bulge — he might be the most significant part of the deal, as he gives the Bears the long-awaited No. 1 wide receiver they have been looking for.
At only 25 years old, Moore, a five year NFL vet, has an established record that can help project a lot of potential production for him with Justin Fields throwing to him.
The University of Maryland product caught 7 touchdowns in 2022 and racked up 888 receiving yards with a carousel of quarterbacks throwing to him. Prior to ‘22, Moore recorded three straight 1000-yard seasons.
The best part of bring in Moore is that he is under contract through 2025.
This decision certainly helps shape the way the Bears take on free agency which starts on Wednesday, March 15th. And given the reporting of prospective signings coming from Monday’s beginning of the legal tampering period, it looks like Chicago is a top destination for new talent.
Check out the video also for discussions of what the Bears may do now at the No. 9 spot in the upcoming draft, which takes place in Kansas City on April 27th.
