Bears Game Notebook: The Turn Around (Week 4 vs. Lions)
Now that’s a turn around right there after one quarter.
The Bears take a 7-0 lead over the Detroit Lions mainly on the legs of running back David Montgomery and the downfield passing to wide receiver Darnell Mooney. This is what it should look like on offense. Quarterback Justin Fields looks comfortable and playing free because it has been heavy run and downfield play action.
Defensively it has been more of a bend not break start. That being said the Bears were gifted a turnover and the team took advantage. Shout out to the secondary as they battle and have been very active on the ball.
Lots of question marks have surrounded the Bears all week. Give credit to head coach Matt Nagy some credit for getting the team ready to play (opinion: and credit Nagy for giving play calling to offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, thats what it looks like so far)
Halftime: 14-0 Bears
Steady is the course right now for the Bears. The strength of the team is the defensive line and the unit has given relentless pressure. Inside linebacker Alec Ogletree made a touchdown saving deflection and defensive back Jaylon Johnson continues his quietly superb play. The defense could use a little more points on the board from the Bears offense, but they have enough to win this game against this opponent to this point of the contest.
Speaking of the Bears offense, they have continued to be steady. The only real mistake being a deflected Fields pass at the line of scrimmage that ended up in Lions hands. Give the kudos though to the plan the offense is trying to execute overall. Still would like to see Fields on the run more and using his legs to put pressure on the Lions defense. Montgomery continues to impress and is also getting a heavy workload which is what top offensive playmakers should get. The passing game has highlighted Fields strengths and minimized his weaknesses.
One more half to go and the game is still close enough that the Lions aren’t worried at all. Meaning the Bears better bring it and take care of the second half by first winning the third quarter.
End of 3rd: Bears lead 24-7
Another great quarter from the Bears as a team all around. Defense continues to wreck havoc but lets be real, the showstopper is Justin Fields right now. Multiple play calls, well called and times, have shown off the arm talent of Fields. Really doesn’t matter if Fields has to drop one in the bucket 30 yards downfield or on a rope in a tight window 30 yards downfield. All around its been an impressive glimpse into what can be for the future…and possibly even this season.
Bears win 24-14 over the Lions
Fourth quarter was not pretty but not bad either. Overall its a win that was a must performance in achieving said win. Beating the bad teams isn’t the Bears issue. Now its about carrying over this winning game plan, even if Montgomery is lost for sometime, in order to beat a team like the Raiders next Sunday afternoon.
